Geologic Modeling

Our trained geologists and engineers understand the importance of developing a realistic, accurate, and comprehensive total geologic model based on the subsurface and surface information. These models begin with information related to the site topography and include visible surface features that relate to the soil, bedrock, and groundwater conditions. During the subsurface exploration program, the test boring inspectors plot the information from the geotechnical borings to the proper scale on the geologic profiles and cross-sections to provide consistency between data interpretation and to identify characteristics of the subsurface model. As the model is developed during the subsurface exploration program, this allows for the project manager to modify the exploration program by changing the spacing, depth, or sampling method as appropriate to collect the most relevant information for the design. A careful review of the geologic model is completed by the engineer and discussions with the geologists and test boring inspectors allow for detailed considerations of the conditions that may create uncertainty and risk within a project. It is also important to keep the mindset that the model is a working document that is updated as more information is available.
